In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bells in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato, calling on Indigenous and mestizo people to overthrow Spanish colonial rule. The screen displays 3D renderings of historical figures from the independence movement, complemented by multimedia content and trivia games, allowing visitors—especially teenagers—to “get to know” figures such as Hidalgo and Morelos in a more engaging way.

When visitors “ring” virtual church bells with their fingertips or swipe along a timeline to “experience” the course of the War of Independence from 1810 to 1821, the boundary between technology and ritual becomes blurred. And what keeps this “touch” as responsive as ever—even beneath the museum’s thick glass, amid the electromagnetic noise of the exhibition hall, and under visitors’ gloves—is a capacitive touchscreen from Hangzhou.
